At least two structural columns buckled and failed in a 37-story office tower in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday, prompting evacuations of nearby streets and buildings.

Construction crews working on the former pharmaceutical company building, a high-profile housing project, were evacuated after it was determined that it was at risk of collapse.

The renovation project is billed as the largest office-to-residential conversion in the city’s history, creating some 1,600 units of housing.
